Why Rest Days are Necessary to Get Lean and Gain Muscle

Do you keep pushing the daily workouts without taking a break? Some people think more is better but that's not the case with exercise. Workouts place stress on our bodies and tear down muscle tissue.

Breaking down your body with exercise requires adequate recovery time to repair and build muscle. Without this necessary component to your fitness program, you are setting yourself up for overtraining syndrome. This can happen when the body is pushed beyond its natural ability to recover.

There is healing power through rest and sleep when it comes to getting fit. It is true that muscles are torn in the gym, fed in the kitchen, and built in the bed. A simple way to say workout regularly, eat right and get plenty of rest. Without applying all these components, your body will be unable to respond the way you want.

What Happens?

When you fail to listen to your body needing rest and leading to overtraining, you can experience some of the following:

  • Lack of energy/tired
  • General aches and pains
  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Reduced athletic performance
  • Reduced muscle gains
  • Increased illness (decreased immunities)
  • Increased risk of injury
  • Lack of motivation and burnout
  • Irritability/moodiness
  • Headaches
  • Insomnia

Listen to Your Body

Are muscle gains, weight loss, and fitness goals important to you? Then you will need to listen to your body and provide the rest it needs.

Put aside the machismo attitude of thinking you need to keep pushing an already tired body and give it a rest. Without rest, you won't realize the muscle gain you desire and only set yourself up for failure.

Fitness is about having a healthy balance. This means working your body for goals not into the ground.

If you are feeling overly sore and very fatigued, this will not be a good day to perform a workout, but to rest. Allow those muscle time to recover and build so you can come back stronger and better.
