Symptoms of Hormone Imbalance and Methods for Relief

Every woman on the planet will struggle with hormonal changes to some degree. The negative side effects of decreased sex hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone) increase as we age.  They can be especially bothersome during perimenopause and menopause.

This Sucks

What the hell do you do with the negative changes you are going through? For many women, it really sucks and disrupts the quality of life. It will take a bit of research and brainstorming about foods that may reduce symptoms, natural alternatives, and other ways to experience relief from the hormone imbalance.

Many of us are lost in the dark when it comes to hormones and what to do. Western medicine typically will prescribe birth control or other hormones and send you on your way. Is that the best method to bring our body back into hormone balance? What about other alternatives or a change in lifestyle that may help?

Symptoms and Tests

The first step is to make an appointment with your gynecologist to discuss your symptoms and request a follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) blood test. The doctor may also include a thyroid (TSH) check depending on your symptoms.

The adverse symptoms are numerous for hormone imbalance and will vary per woman. Some of the symptoms may include:

  • Mood swings
  • Night sweats
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Anxiety
  • Decreased libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Sexual dysfunction (inability to orgasm/struggle to achieve orgasm)
  • Hot flashes
  • Depression
  • Food cravings
  • Weight gain

Finding Relief

With such an extensive list of symptoms, it's no wonder any woman feels overwhelmed. This is the time to be proactive and look for answers because relief just doesn't happen without some help. Taking the necessary steps to balance your hormones is a personal responsibility. This can also feel unfair, but the journey will really help you take better care of your health and body.

Once it has been determined your hormones are out of wack, you will want to begin researching the best methods shown to be effective to correct hormone imbalance. There are foods, natural supplements, creams, hormone therapies and an abundance of options to come to the hormonal rescue.  But the choices for relief may feel overwhelming and not knowing the right decision to make may seem difficult.

You Have Options

Hormone imbalance isn't pleasant but you have treatment options. The following tips will be helpful in your research to relief:

Nutrition

The most natural way to start bringing your hormones back into balance is eating nutritious food. Studies have shown that certain foods like watermelon and pumpkin seeds can boost our libido. Eating foods containing fiber, antioxidants, lean protein, and healthy fats can help set the stage for happier hormone balance.

Exercise

Another natural way to reduce the symptoms of hormone imbalance is being involved in a regular exercise program. Studies indicate reduced anxiety, depression, and weight loss that can be attributed to hormonal changes. You may find walking 30-minutes per day brings about a more positive outlook and the ability to manage your hormones better.

Hormone Replacement

Bio-identical hormones and Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) are two methods that can reduce the bothersome symptoms of hormone imbalance.  Bio-identicals have been termed “natural” and generally provided by a natural path or holistic doctor. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is prescribed by a medical doctor in a variety of forms including pills, creams, gels, and vaginal inserts. The "bio" route seems to be the most accepted by women trying to stay away from synthetic hormones and the belief is that the risk of cancer is reduced with bio-identical hormones. However, hormone therapy is a personal choice with every woman experiencing different symptoms and side effects of therapy.

Creams and things

One of the worst symptoms of hormone imbalance is vaginal dryness. This alone can send your libido into a tailspin with sex becoming the forbidden zone.  It's difficult to remain sexual and feel sexy when our body is clearly saying something else. It becomes an ongoing chore to keep things plumped and lubricated. It can cause frustration for couples BUT there are methods that can help decrease vaginal dryness and improve your sex life. Lubricants to the rescue! The store shelves are packed with all sorts of slippery glides that can make life in the bedroom much more enjoyable. Stocking up is highly recommended once you have found your favorite. Other natural ways to lubricate down under can be done by massaging extra virgin olive oil or coconut oil directly on the labia. You can also use extra virgin coconut oil as a sexual lubricant. There are also natural vitamin E and coconut oil suppositories you can purchase to insert at night or before sex.

Opting Out

Some women sail through hormonal changes and choose not to partake in therapies. Others who experience slight symptoms may also choose to ride out the storm without treatment.

The great thing is all of us have a choice in how to treat hormone imbalance. Whatever choice is made, living a quality healthy life and doing our best through hormonal changes is what matters. It may be a journey but we can still have a fulfilling, happy, and satisfying life.
